Whose Lex Credendi? Popular Catholicism as a Theological Problem for Liturgy" The rule that "lex orandi, lex credendi" has been historically important to both theology and liturgy. But whose "lex" either is can make a significant difference in the understanding and development of both theology and liturgy. If popular Catholicism is arguably the people's real daily religion, and if the people are truly the Church, then the Church's theology and liturgy cannot but deeply reflect the prayer and the belief of the real people who are the real Church. Nevertheless, historically, this has been far from the case. We will examine the important theological (dogmatic, systematic) problems raised by popular Catholicism. While using Catholicism as case study (and Latino/a Catholicism, more specifically), we will also attempt to discover the consequences for the wider Church. |
