2006 Agenda
Alex Garcia-Rivera will join this seminar for one of the two days of meetings. He will be joined by Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley colleague and Academy member Tom Scirghi, with whom he is co-authoring a book on C.S. Peirce's semiotics as applied to litugy--directly on our topic.
Friday, January 6
- We will have a morning presentation by Alex Garcia-Rivera that will locate Peirce within the overall hermeneutical-semiotic tradition.
- We will have a longer afternoon session with Alex and Tom on the their book, allowing us to continue our discussion of Hughes and incorporate the reading from The Community of the Beautiful (focusing on chs.4-5, pp. 91-154, at Alex's suggestion) and some draft chapters of their book (which they are willing to share in advance of the meeting).
Saturday, January 7
- Richard McCarron will present “‘In This Place We Flesh’: Enlisting Contemporary Hermeneutics of Embodiment for Interpreting Liturgical Celebration.” He is hoping to have something written for us by mid-December in advance of the meeting.
- Planning for 2007: Keeping in mind the consensus from our last meeting that, having delved more deeply into semiotics in 2006, we might want to dedicate part of our meeting for 2007 to semiotics and music, I have been in touch with Michael Joncas (whose dissertation was dedicated to that topic). Mike may join us for some of our discussion this year, and is happy to present something for us in 2007 if the group would still like to go in that direction. (Mike reminded me that the brand of semiotics he utilizes is neither Greimasian nor Peircian--so this is an opportunity to investigate at yet another semiotic approach to liturgy.)
