Historical Research: 16th Century to the Present

Mission Statement

The work of the Historical Research seminar is not restricted by theme, geographic location, or ecclesiastical tradition, but by time period: our papers and discussions address liturgies and liturgical issues from the sixteenth century to the present. Studies, analyses, and comparisons from various traditions and experiences are invited.

2008 Academy Meeting Agenda

Following last year’s theme, the seminar will continue the discussion of “Not the Usual Suspects” as we explore some figures generally not well-known in the area of liturgical studies. In addition, we will attend to efforts in the area of the historiography of hymnody and church music.

3.   Presentation on Friedrich Lochner by Kent Burreson

4.   Presentation the Relationship of Worship, Mission, and Transformation as Church by John Rempel

5.   Presentation on the Shape of the Lord’s Supper in Relationship to the Lord’s Day and the Narrative of John’s Gospel by Arlo Duba.

6.   Presentations on the Historiography of Hymnody and Church Music led by Victor Gebauer

7.   Reports on work in progress by the seminar members and on progress by doctoral students
