2006 Agenda

  1. Continuing the work he presented to the seminar at the 2005 meeting, John Hill will explore the implications of Rene Girard’s theory and hermeneutic for the practice of the Scrutinies.
  2. John O’Brien will lead the group in a discussion of The Change of Conversion and the Origin of Christendom by Alan Kreider (Harrisburg, PA: Trinity Press, 1999).
  3. Paul Turner will lead the group in a discussion of his vice-presidential address.  That address will expand upon the topic he had originally proposed to the seminar group:  the Roman Catholic Rite of Reception into full communion "with" or "of" the Roman Catholic Church.
  4. Vicky Tufano will present an overview of the significant Roman Catholic paper, "Journey to the Fullness of Faith" and Dan Benedict will reflect on the value of this piece for Protestant churches doing catechumenal ministry.  As I file this report, Dan, newly retired from his position at the United Methodist General Board of Discipleship and adjusting to life in Hawaii, has not yet decided if he will be able to join us for this year’s meeting.  If not, he will submit a written reflection for distribution and consideration by the seminar.
  5. John O’Brien will present his work on the paper, "The Ethics of Water in the Pastoral Letters on the Environment by the US and Canadian Catholic Bishops and the Concerns of the World Watch Essays on Water."
  6. Robin Jensen (of Vanderbilt University and the Early Liturgical History group) will join us for a presentation on baptismal iconography and architecture that would include images from Italy, Gaul, North Africa, Syria, and Asia Minor.
  7. Pending the results of Timothy Fitzgerald’s invitation, we hope that someone from the local Roman Catholic diocesan worship office will be able to give a presentation on fonts and baptismal spaces in new or recently renovated Roman Catholic churches in the San Diego area.
