James Donohue presented a paper dealing with the choice and function of biblical and prayer texts in the 1983 Pastoral Care of the Sick’s Rite for the Commendation of the Dying. This paper provided the background of the commendation rite from the 1614 Rituale Romanum and its antecedents, showing how the selection and function of biblical and prayer texts in the contemporary rites (Latin and English) have been altered and how these altered texts reflect a different understanding of the afterlife and, consequently, a different approach to dying and to the pastoral care that the dying person needs.
