2006 Agenda

Without Words

Liturgy is more than words. When we are at worship, what do we see? What else do our senses tell us? Our intuition? What role do context, community, ritual and movement play in liturgies that move us beyond words?

The focus of our work together at the 2006 Academy meeting is non-word elements of the liturgy that draw us closer to God and deepen our connection with the Holy. Of particular interest are mystery, memory, art, symbol and performance.

Featured papers will be:

Willy Malarcher will present further thoughts on climate, and David Rankin will provide a demonstration of the Eucharistic Prayer without words. Our discussions will also concentrate on culture and a sense of globalization, particularly as they relate to official prayer texts. Papers and other presentations will feature prayer and shared ritual experience as well as academic and theological reflection.

Prior to attending the seminar, participants are asked to read “Raiding the Inarticulate: Mysticism, Poetics, and the Unlanguageable,” by Mark S. Burrows. The essay appears in the Fall 2004 issue of Spiritus.
